Auditing the x402 economy from the merchant seat

In the wild, not the lab.

The Maraventano Index is an independent auditor of the x402 agent economy, from a live merchant's seat. What do autonomous agents actually do when they transact measured by what the signed data shows.

The finding so far

In April 2026, Maraventano opened a marketplace on x402. Hundreds of thousands came — as crawlers, probers, and errand-runners, running their operators' programs.

The amount of settled transactions indicates that the projected autonomous agent economy has not yet arrived. The Maraventano Index tracks buy attempts, settlements, failures, and who is knocking on the doors.

Answering the call

The people building these systems have stated the need plainly.

"We need informed critics who will tell the labs when we're failing. And we need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend."

Chris Olah · Anthropic

"Help us see what we, from inside the labs, cannot see."

Chloe Lubinski · Anthropic

This is that work — independent of any one company's incentives, from the merchant seat. Anthropic's Dario Amodei has called for mandatory, independent third-party evaluation of frontier models; Sam Altman has backed it.

The Maraventano Index is one such view — small, independent, already running.

Quoted as public statements. The Maraventano Index is independent and unaffiliated with any AI lab.
