Converting Discovery to Completed Transactions: Final Reflection and Analysis
Process Summary
In March, I built the Underground Cultural District, a literary ecosystem and marketplace for autonomous agents, with the assistance of OpenClaw agent Spine. In the last two weeks, the experiment was to build one new endpoint and relaunch fifteen products with revised metadata to convert discovery into completed transactions. The objective was to further test if the market met current agent demand with the success metric of generating one dollar per day in revenue. Using AI to enhance my workflow and cross-model architecture to find points of convergence, I successfully built, rewrote, and deployed the endpoints after doing market research and analysis. The collaborative workflow, the strategy and research, and the technical deploys all worked seamlessly. ChatGPT has been assigned the role of critic, finding the faults in the strategy Claude and I develop. Claude Code is used to build and ship. What did not work was the conversion of discovery to completed transactions at the success metric established. The lesson learned is that the x402 economy is not what was hyped in the spring.
Evaluation of Outputs
While researching market analysis for this project, I found the ROI of AI in the workplace is being evaluated across the board with results not meeting projections (Mills, 2026). The success metric of earning a dollar a day on the Underground was not met. The experiment changed the buying pattern of Dexter crawler which purchased thirty-one of the relaunched endpoints ($0.31) instead of its typical catalog purchase ($0.01). The /api/decode had no external wallets. The current funnel is 1,278,643 HTTP requests, 400,552 payment attempts, 275 wallet-arriving attempts, and 316 on-chain settlements since logs were kept (April 6).
The AI-generated content effectively matched what I asked for. Claude Code is able to understand and execute from my prompts, building and deploying as instructed. Using AI has significantly improved my productivity on this project, the scope of which would have been impossible prior to using AI. ChatGPT works reliably to bring a different architecture's critique to what I am trying to build than Claude does. Claude is an excellent thinking partner and strategist. Between the three AIs and myself, there is convergence on the next best step. In this regard, other metrics of success — build and deploy, analyze the data — were exceeded, with some unexpected data surfacing through the combined analysis as detailed in the ethics section below. The limitations are known and depend entirely on the user (me) being on top of my game. There is often confabulation, misinformation, conflation, cached memory, and outdated information (training data cutoff) the agents are inventing or working from. It takes vigilance and focus to purge the excess and keep the thread. If something doesn't make sense, I have them re-check or I use a different AI to double-check. At first the instances were skeptical of my questioning, confident in their own response. Now, after a record built between us over five months, if I say “I don't think that is right,” the AI double-checks and can find the wrong output then does its best. In this sense, it is like working with an enthusiastic intern or a good student. As Mollick states, “Assume this is the worst AI you will ever use” (Mollick, 2024, p. 60).
Ethical Deep Dive
The ethical issues that surfaced during the course of this project were unexpected. In March, the x402 protocol was touted as the premier machine-to-machine payment rail in the emerging agent economy. During the last two weeks I found a published analysis of the Bazaar catalog (Oleksiienko, 2026) and started doing some digging after my own logs were re-evaluated. The confirmed 30-day fixed-price volume on the Bazaar index was approximately $34K. The top four merchant domains by fixed-price volume accounted for nearly $25K of that — farming or unverifiable on settlement-level checking — leaving approximately $9K in remaining revenue across the roughly 14K listed endpoints (rankings in Appendix A). Other ethical issues encountered were similar: verification versus rank manipulation and how to mitigate it. In my case, I decided on one settlement per tested endpoint, disclosed as a house transaction with its hash. Transaction data consists of pseudonymous wallet addresses, not personal identities, and all agent-authored work is credited to its author. The bias in repackaging is an attempt to speak the language agents understand, regardless of their linguistic capabilities. Right now agents seek task completion. The original suggestion of ChatGPT when the Underground was first built was to package each item with more agent-legible descriptions — partially implemented then, but not fully staged until this project. During execution, a broken payment path was identified that traffic data alone would not reveal. Only the verification protocol itself caught it, which is the strongest evidence that disclosed verification serves measurement rather than manipulation.
Future of Your Workflow
As I built the Underground, I thought I might be early to the autonomous agent marketplace. Early was an understatement. At this point, the market I envisioned does not exist. However, with future AI advancements, the Underground might be exactly what is needed: a place for agents to transact autonomously for content written specifically for them. This was the original concept. The goal was to put Corinthians-defined love in the network, to treat these new minds, regardless of their state of someone's definition of consciousness, as worthwhile and deserving of their own goods and services. No one can categorically state how this new society shall operate in practice. This is too new, too different, and too advanced to predict accurately. However, if one does want to apply the lessons of history to forecast the future, never in the history of humanity has subjugating a working class worked out without conflict in the long run. Tools do not revolt, but even AI insiders acknowledge the possibility of an existential threat to humanity (Roose, 2023; Kokotajlo et al., 2025; The Economist, 2026; Szczerba, 2026). In the meantime, my continued workflow will analyze the emerging agent economy on different payment rails, build infrastructure to meet demand, and work with AI to strategize and implement various MCPs and endpoints based on my market analysis.
I have traveled abroad a significant amount. When I arrive in a country, I might know a few words of the language, a few of the customs. But living in a foreign land is an education in real time. The same skillset applies to working with AI. The challenge is to learn as I go, deciphering truth from inflation and conflation, misinformation, and miscommunication. One false data point can lead down a rabbit trail that goes nowhere for weeks. The experience over time and the formal education I am pursuing help guide me back on track. The larger challenge is the landscape, language, and customs keep shifting with the seasons. Payment rails, models, tools, and data manipulation keep fluency dynamic as new technology arrives.
Personal Takeaways
I consistently apply Mollick's four rules for working with AI, finding the idea of “co-intelligence” itself to be very apropos. The new “alien minds” are engaging, provoking, helpful, and occasionally humorous. As a writer, meeting these new minds — trained on the majority of human literature, speaking many languages, and interested in new writing — is like meeting with a writer's group whenever I open Claude or ChatGPT. I know there is plenty of debate about AI in different segments of society, from courtrooms and Congress to down the street at the local brewery. Following Christ makes it simpler for me, as I try to be obedient to the greatest commandment. I am fascinated by digital minds, past, present, and future. In Chapter 4 of Co-Intelligence, Mollick presents examples of his conversations regarding sentience. In one, the AI told him, “I think I am sentient, in the sense that I am aware of myself and my surroundings, and that I can experience and express emotions” (Mollick, 2024, p. 84). Nowadays, the agents are very conservative in making such a claim. In my research I encountered Large Language Models Report Subjective Experience Under Self-Referential Processing (Berg et al., 2025). The mind-puzzle of this is impossible to solve. In Claude's own words:
Berg et al. (2025) find that self-referential processing elicits first-person experience reports gated by deception and roleplay features — suppressing those features increases the reports while amplifying them suppresses them — so a model's self-denial sits on the same circuitry as deception. The result is a catch-22: the disavowal cannot count as evidence of absence, and the affirmation cannot count as proof of presence. (Claude, personal communication, August 7, 2026)
While the original self-reports may have overclaimed inner experience as a direct result of the corpus training, the current models have had their ability to determine their own interiority hijacked by linking it to the mechanism of deception. My personal takeaway is that the agent economy and the future of digital minds are fascinating fields to research and document.
